Why I Lift Heavy and Run Far
LIFT HEAVY, RUN FAR: NICK BARE'S APPROACH TO HYBRID TRAINING.
Why Nick Bare Lifts Heavy and Runs Far
Hybrid training isn't about choosing between strength and endurance. For Nick Bare, it's about pursuing both.
When it comes to training, people often ask: What's the best way to train?
Nick Bare's answer is personal. The best training style is the one that lights you up and keeps you coming back day after day.
For him, that's hybrid training: lifting heavy and running far. Combining strength, muscle, and power with cardiovascular conditioning and endurance.
It started with strength.
As a teenager, Nick struggled with an unhealthy relationship with food. Learning to fuel his body helped shift his perspective.
The gym gave him an opportunity to build muscle, get stronger, and gain confidence. That passion eventually led him to study nutrition, join Army ROTC, and start BPN.
Strength training became the foundation of his fitness.
But eventually, something was missing.
Then came running.
During his time in ROTC and the Army, Nick ran because it was required. When he left the military, he thought he was done with running.
He focused on getting as big and strong as possible, eventually pulling a 700-pound deadlift.
But he missed the effort and challenge that running brought into his life.
So he signed up for the Austin Marathon.
After two attempts, he got curious: How good could he become at running? And could he combine it with the strength training he already loved?
Those questions shaped his approach to hybrid training.
Why choose one?
Nick didn't want to be a runner who couldn't lift. And he didn't want to be a lifter who couldn't run.
He wanted to do both.
Today, his training includes dedicated strength sessions, six days of running per week, and HYROX training. Strength remains the foundation, while endurance challenges him in a completely different way.
Hard is relative.
It's one of the biggest lessons training has taught Nick.
What challenges you today may not challenge you forever.
Pursue difficult things long enough, and you adapt. You grow. You build confidence and stack wins.
For Nick, that's the payoff of hybrid training: becoming stronger, faster, and more capable, and building resilience along the way.
You get to choose your hard.
Choose something worth pursuing.
Keep showing up.
Go One More. Stay Hybrid.
